As a pageant queen, I searched online for an appearance to make to promote my title, which was Ms. New York Woman 2010. I can’t remember everything about this search but I do recall completing an online application for something I wasn’t certain of. As soon as I clicked the submit button I forgot about it and moved on to find something less mysterious.
One year later, I received a call from a producer saying that I had completed an application online and was being considered for a project. The producer had an air of secrecy that confused me, but at that moment, I remembered the online application. During the phone call, I remember the producer emphasizing “natural” and “come casual.”
Because the meet and greet was held at the posh Hearst Communications (publisher of Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Elle, to name a few), I should have known better, but I didn’t. I showed up for the interview wearing sweats or jeans and not one stitch of makeup. People in the lobby and on the escalator gave me weird looks. I acted like I didn’t see them. When I met with the producers, we sat down and they asked me questions about fashion. After that, the producers told me the project is to model for actress Jaclyn Smith’s clothing line to air on Good Housekeeping TV. I was surprised and embarrassed. I started to explain my appearance, but they stopped me and said, “don’t worry.”
I was selected by Kmart and Good Housekeeping magazine to be one of five models to wear the famous actress’ clothes sold at Kmart for a fashion segment on Good Housekeeping TV. Blessings. That day was wonderful. Everything was makeup, and curling irons, and racks of clothes.
When we were ready, the famous actress came in to meet us, check out our appearance in her clothing line, and take photos with us. In the photo posted (which was taken during the taping), I am with Rosemary Ellis, former editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping magazine, and the “Charlie’s Angel” star, Jaclyn Smith.
Did you ever experience something mysterious that turned out to be a pleasant surprise?
